"Sweet and Petite"

Katie Stearns / Comment on this

While visiting with a painter friend more than a year ago, I complimented her on an African violet plant that was sitting on her dining room windowsill.  I had never seen a richer, more saturated, deep purple African violet flower before!  And, it was blooming profusely.

Several months later, my friend handed me a small, plastic flower pot in which she'd grown -- from a large "mother" leaf -- a tiny African violet plant.  "What's this?", I asked.  Her reply, "Remember the African violet plant with the deep purple flowers that you loved so much, well here's your very own plant, grown from a cutting from the original."  I couldn't believe it!

It was indeed a teeny tiny plant.  Once my petite African violet had acclimated to living on my kitchen windowsill with an  eastern exposure, I removed the large mother leaf.  Well, that little plant took it's time growing!  Only now, at about the year mark, did it finally bloom rewarding my love and patience with those deep purple blooms.  Yay!
